Second
Congress of AMAHORO People's Congress
AMAHORO People's Congress held its second congress in Toronto, Canada from
the 16th to 18th of January, 2004.
Participants to the congress reviewed the party’s accomplishments and
were pleased to see that the cornerstone principle upon which AMAHORO People's
Congress was founded has been embraced by virtually the entire opposition
movement. Indeed, peaceful struggle
for a democratic Rwanda is fast becoming the preferred approach of all
opposition groups. AMAHORO People's
Congress continues to encourage all Rwandans to adhere to this principle as it
is the only way to achieve long lasting change and sustainable democracy.
The congress was pleased by the continual growth of the party and its
increased national and international recognition. The participants were confident that this recognition will
help expedite the implementation of the party’s mandate.
Participants to the congress also noted that there has been a growing
acceptance of divergent opinions within the Rwandan community.
They pledged to continue driving this effort until the government is
brought in line and begins practicing true political plurality.
After reviewing the current situation in Rwanda, the congress found that:
The perpetual incarceration of political dissidents,
The lack of progress in the political
climate in Rwanda,
The exploitation and abuse of the
judicial system by the ruling party,
The series of assassinations targeting
genocide survivors,
The lack of resolution in the many cases
of disappearances and assassinations that seem to be politically motivated,
The unchecked corruption and embezzlement
of Bank funds by high ranking government officials,
The impoverishment of the population and
the increased hunger,
As well as the hindrances to an
independent civil society;
are all indications of the failures of the current government and its
unwillingness to promote the well being of the people.
AMAHORO People's Congress calls upon the government, once more, to take
its responsibilities in hands and address the above listed issues.
AMAHORO calls upon the Rwandan and the international communities to join
in its effort to build a lawful nation state and promote the well being of the
entire Rwandan nation.
For AMAHORO People's Congress,
Alexandre Kimenyi
President
